• 5.0 out of 5 stars from Kindle Customer -- Another great book . Different in some ways than the previous nine. : I LOVE these books. This one was a bit more repetitive than the series that precedes it to catch new readers up and to explain who Thomas Herrington is. So many wonderful characters. I love Jorge like everyone does! I love the complexity and descriptions of not only the exterior lives of each but the interior lives as well are explored. The situations and numbers of combatants involved can be a bit unreal, daunting and almost unbelievable... And we go along because these characters and the situations they find themselves in require heroic and amazing prowess to overcome. His writing is clear and crisp and so descriptive. He carries you along with his descriptions of scenes and situations and you read along never wishing to pause for real life to interfere. There are many adult situations so I would recommend these books for older Young adults through mature adults! I recommend these e books highly for men and women. I read mostly women authors and Davis Penny is one of few exceptions to my rule! He is a terrific writer and writes women as well as men characters. I love that. A true representation of the times and places the writes about. A real education.Worth exploring much more after reading his books. Highly recommend. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Rabid Reader -- So good to read another book about Thomas Berrington and his family : I had forgotten I had pre-ordered this book, so imagine my surprise and delight when I saw it in my library. I immediately launched into it and was once more immersed in Thomas' analytical mind as he works to figure out what is behind a nefarious group of mafia-like extortionists robbing and terrorizing London's businesses. When he leaves London for the town in which he was born, he finds the bone men setting up their extortion there as well. He ultimately traces the origins of the offshoot group back to London. As he waits to accompany Princess Catherine of Aragon to her marriage to Prince Arthur of England, Thomas sets out to wipe out the bone men. As usual, this latest Thomas Berrington book is a gripping and exciting read. I read it in one sitting and hated to see it end! I remain waiting for the next in the series. • 4.0 out of 5 stars from C Brooks -- Okay : I always enjoy being reunited with Thomas and family. I’ve wanted Thomas to return to England and find his sister for a while. So, I was excited to read this book. However, I would have liked more from the reunion of Thomas and Agnes. I also wanted to experience more of England and the culture as with Moorish Spain in previous books. The mystery was okay, but could have been better. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Barbara M Gaffney -- Hard to put down : Thomas Berrington is an unforgettable character, but its the tight plot and focused point of view that keeps the reader enthralled. So many historical novels keep shifting from one setting and point of view character to another, and the reader tires of the shifts. Everything is told from Berrington's wise and intelligent perspective. The supporting characters are original and compelling, the settings fascinating and skillfully drawn. This new series is excellent and seamlessly slides from Spain to follow Thomas and his friends on his new adventures in England. I could not put the book down although I was trying to take my time reading it. It isn’t necessary to read the other books in the previous series and is good in its own right. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Sheumais -- Welcome home Thomas : It was partly because I had just battled through a book I really did not enjoy that I was so eager to read this book, but mostly because I had binged on the Kindle sets of Thomas' Spanish adventures and enjoyed his company in a historic setting I wasn't familiar with. Perhaps it's just my experience, but there seems to have been a lot of novels about this period recently, possibly due to C. J. Sansom's Shardlake series, but that's not an issue with a character already defined in that different setting. The only problem now is they are not published quickly enough to stem my appetite. Fantastic read I would recommend everyone to read Red Hill and you will be hooked. Thomas has aged and I feel the tone and rhythm of the story lines have changed with him but he is still surrounded by his friends, still getting into trouble and still solving the mysteries with style.
